Those who wish to reap the benefits of digitalization must take special care of IT security. This realization is not necessarily exciting or new, but it is gaining more relevance every year if we look at the CIO’s agenda. Various aspects of graphics trend up and down in hype. Many questions emerge on the stage that seem at first incredibly urgent. However, in the fast-paced nature of digital business, they may become passé again tomorrow. IT security, however, is an ever-relevant issue, which, in its various forms and differing manifestations, remains current and even gains in importance. This is also the conclusion reached by Capgemini’s recent survey entitled “Die CIO-Agenda 2017 – Data & Insights Teil 1.” According to the report, security is the most important issue to CIOs, and its importance has increased slightly since 2016.
EU General Data Protection Regulation straight ahead
It can no longer be denied that the EU General Data Protection Regulation is fast approaching, forcing responsible players to act. In view of the increased use of cloud resources, the importance of cloud security has also increased significantly. On the scale from 1 (very important) to 5 (completely unimportant), the value of 2.6 last year increased to 2.2 this year. This is the opinion of an ECJ ruling which has prohibited the storage and processing of the personal data of EU citizens in the US, leading numerous companies to redesign the location of their data and their security concepts.
This was accompanied by the adoption of the new EU General Data Protection Regulation. It raises several safety standards in this context and mandates that corresponding measures must be implemented by May 2018. When it comes to their own cloud, companies should consider what the implemented security measures of the new regulation take into account. A data protection impact assessment is only the beginning for the companies concerned. Subsequent coordination with the competent supervisory authority will only increase the administrative burden. Companies must additionally prove and document their legal protection level. It is also necessary to test the way in which personal data can be recovered quickly if lost.
Here is why you should not worry
IT security obviously requires a certain amount of effort, if handled correctly. However, many companies do not have the financial or human resources to address these issues in a rational and sustainable way. As is often the case, the simplest answer is sometimes the most obvious answer. Why should companies deal with such a question at all if it is not a part of their core business? And why should expertise be developed in a field that will not contribute directly to the growth of the company in the future? The market for full IT service providers has developed so strongly in recent years that there is virtually no longer an IT issue that cannot be externalized. It is important to choose partners who are not only proud of their own performance, but can always bring the right solution providers to the table in order to solve even the most specific challenges. A worthy full IT service provider cannot be recognized by its price, but by its problem-solving expertise.
