Ethernet

Initially, the standard of the wired network technology was designed for Local Area Networks (LANs). Meanwhile, it is used in global networks and displaced technologies such as @Token Ring to niche markets. The IEEE-Norm 802.3 determines cable types, plugs, signalisation and paket formats. The Ethernet is represented in all transmission rates and uses different leading mediums (from coaxial to fibre optics). Today, the “Fast Ethernet” (100 MBit/s) and the “10-Gigabit-Ethernet” are standard. With the latest generation, “Power over Ethernets” (PoE), devices with Ethernet-capability are powerd with a Twisted-Pair-Cable.
