Storage Area Network (SAN)

SAN also stands for “Storage Attached Network” and should not be mistaken for “Storage Area Network” due to the same abbreviation. In this type of SAN, the individual storage components are separated from the network leading to an improved performance and storage capacity. Special components such as switches and network interface cards, type fibre channel or infiniband, are needed. Given the growing bandwiths of the ethernet of 10 Gigabit, IP-based SAN-networks may be created.
