Storage Tiering is an approach storing the data in correspondance with the number of hits on the storage media (storage tiers). As many storage systems contain more than one hard disk format, the storage tiering can also be used in smaller systems. The hits on the data are monitored, the number of hits decides where the data are shifted to. I/O-intensive information lie on Tier-1, here, mostly SSDs or SAS-plates are used. Data that are needed only rarely are stored on cheaper media such as SATA-drives. For almost all producers, the tiering is executed automatically.
