• DARZ presents first true hybrid cloud solution on the basis of NetApp Storage
• NetApp Private Storage as a Service: hybrid storage architecture allows for simultaneous use of secure (private) enterprise storage and public cloud resources
• DARZ now offers a shared and dedicated hybrid cloud solution from a single source that includes high scaling, flexibility and security
• Simple data migration through seamless connection of colocation, private cloud and public cloud.
DARMSTADT, GERMANY, July 9, 2015 – Many companies are finding hybrid cloud offerings quite appealing. After all, they unite security aspects with scalability and promise to take the financial pressure off investments in infrastructure. Nevertheless, if we take a closer look at them, the limitations of many of these offerings become clear. Hybrid cloud architectures are often inflexible and distinguish too strictly between the storage layers inside and outside the company. This, in turn, means that they prevent data from being exchanged between private and public cloud services during everyday business.
With NetApp Private Storage as a Service, the full-service IT vendor DARZ now operates the first Europe-wide solution for implementing a true hybrid cloud model in cooperation with NetApp. The new model allows companies to combine services in a flexible manner and gives them the freedom to choose between multiple cloud vendors (private and public). Furthermore, it allows for smooth usage of data with the various cloud services.
NetApp Private Storage as a Service thus unites all of the demands placed on cloud-based applications, digital business models and data security in a single architecture. Besides receiving full service from a single source, customers will benefit from having complete control over their data and high data protection based on German regulations. Another key advantage is that they don’t have to go without enterprise storage performance and features. Invoicing takes place based on use and the services provided and this, in turn, ensures maximum cost efficiency and transparency.
With NetApp Private Storage as a Service, DARZ offers the first true Europe-wide hybrid cloud model and thus a unique solution that combines all of the demands: multi-client capability, low latency, immediate connections to well-known hyperscalers and global scalability. The solution integrates and connects the areas colocation, private cloud and public cloud completely and seamlessly. All of the data is stored at high-security data centers and therefore remains outside the public cloud.
Challenges for the hybrid cloud
“Companies that rely on the cloud find themselves facing various challenges with respect to the solutions currently on the market,” explains Lars Göbel, Head of Sales and IT Services at DARZ. “These include data security and the observance of compliance regulations, but also legal framework conditions and technical limitations with respect to data mobility by relying on individual vendors. You also need to be able to integrate the new solution into existing IT environments,” he adds.
In addition, there is a need for maximum scalability in order to be able to meet the demands of international business. To cover this broad range, organizations are increasingly turning to hybrid cloud architectures. Nevertheless, these offerings are not “genuine” hybrid clouds because previous solutions only consist of different private and public cloud offerings that allow for either the one or the other world to be used, but not simultaneously. Furthermore, current market offerings do not take a company’s possible colocation share into account. Besides, companies must also arrange to have the respective infrastructure (data center, connection, security) provided by other suppliers and this requires significant organizational effort. This is where DARZ’s solution comes in. It not only unites the worlds of the public and private clouds, but also takes the colocation aspect into consideration. And it offers all of this from a single source.
Genuine hybrid cloud from a single source
“Our customers really benefit from our partnership with DARZ. They receive all of the services they need to set up and operate a hybrid cloud infrastructure from a single source. At the same time, our customers retain complete control over their data, which means they can transfer it back and forth between the cloud platforms and their on premise environment at any time,” explains Peter Wüst, Director of Cloud & Alliances CEMA at NetApp.
“In our opinion, the hybrid cloud is becoming the leading approach to providing IT services. But anyone who uses business-critical data outside the company’s borders will also require an adapted strategy for managing data. With NetApp Private Storage as a Service, we support the main demands placed on security, scalability and performance. Furthermore, our approach gives our customers the data fabric of complete control over data. In other words, they can send their data back and forth between cloud platforms and still enjoy freedom of choice with respect to the IT supply model,” explains Peter Wüst, Director of Cloud & Alliances CEMA, NetApp.
The company Helpium is one of the first customers to already use the new hybrid cloud. Helpium.de is an Internet platform for IT support that connects PC users with experts. Those in need of assistance will find experts here who can assist them with their computer problems from a distance. As soon as the experts have logged onto their customer’s computer via the platform, highly sensitive customer data is transmitted and stored. Therefore, protecting and securing data is the highest priority for Helpium.de.
As a fast-growing startup, Helpium benefits mainly from having the freedom of choice between cloud providers that the DARZ solution offers,” says Holger Kärcher, Managing Director of Helpium. “Thanks to the new solution NetApp Private Storage as a Service, we can now rely on the unique shared hybrid cloud model that meets all of the demands we place on security, flexibility and scalability,” he adds.
Thanks to partnerships with various hyperscalers (AWS, Softlayer, VMware), line partners such as euNetworks and the data center partners Global Switch and Equinix, companies receive an IT solution that allows for high scaling, flexibility and maximum security. At the same time, companies are no longer tied to the various vendors. All of the data is stored in an area that the customer alone controls. Furthermore, DARZ is subject to the German data protection law. Unlike vendors who have their headquarters in the USA, DARZ is not subject to the Patriot Act. Besides IT security, DARZ also protects its customers’ data physically. The data center based in Darmstadt has the highest security level, which can currently only be compared with the high-security data centers located in Switzerland.
